What's Today?

What's Today?

By Mya K.Brew

"Mom, do you know what today is?" I ask with a smile. "I know today is going to be a peaceful day. Nobody will argue with their siblings today, right?" I sulk. "I'll go ask dad. Maybe he knows what today is." I skip into the living room with joy. "Dad, do you know what today is?" Dad continues to look at the TV. "No." I sulk. "Are you sure, dad?" He slowly lets out a big sigh. "I'm positive. Can I get back to my show, please?" I slowly walk away with great disappointment.

Maybe Kal knows.  I tip-toe into Kal's room. "Kal, do you know what today is?" She begins the think. "No, sis. I don't." My jaw drops. "What's wrong?" she asks with concern. "Never mind, thanks anyway." She begins to think. "Mya wait I-" I close her door and walk away with more disappointment.

I hope Kaden knows what today is. I don't expect him to. Kaden is dumber than a rock. How he made it to the tenth grade, is beyond surprising. "Kaden, do you know-" "Nope. Sorry." he interrupts. "I didn't even finish my question." I hiss. " So, I don't know the answer."he snaps. I slam his door.

Why doesn't anyone know what today is? It's not fair. Today is really special, but no one knows why.

Mom and dad called everyone into the living room. "Does anyone know what today is?" Mom questioned. Everyone shrugged. "No? Do you mind telling us what today is, dear?" She asked in a pleasant tone. "We don't seem to know" she admitted. I begin to cry, "You all forgot about me. You all don't love me anymore. How could you not know what day it is?" Mom walks over and gives me a hug. "Oh honey, we're sorry. Please tell us what-" "TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!" I interrupt. Everyone gasps. "Oh no, we totally forgot." dad blurted. Mom gave him a mean look.

That probably wasn't the best thing to say, dad. " Nobody said happy birthday to me. Nobody." I wipe the tear streaming down my cheek."Oh honey, we are so sorry we forgot. What can we do to make it up to you?" I take my sleeve and wipe my eyes. "Well-" before I was able to answer, Kal insisted that we get cake, ice cream, and gifts.

"No wait-" Everyone grabs their shoes, hustles out the door, and gets into the car. "Come on, silly. Get in the car." Kal yelled to me.

We drive to the grocery store for the cake and ice cream when we happen to run into granny. "Granny!" I shout with joy. She jumps up, "hello my little angel. I was just getting ready to head over to your house." "Why, granny?" I ask. "Because today is a special day. One of my granddaughter's birthday, I suppose?" She says with a smile. I giggle. "You remembered?" Granny laughs, "how could I forget? I may be old, but I do have a good memory." I give granny a giant hug. "Thank you."
