Never Pretend To Sleep

Never Pretend To Sleep

by Mya K.Brew

I was around 5 years old when I learned to never fake sleep when Grams and Pa come to town. Every year for Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and Independents Day Grams and Pa would come to visit from Arizona. Whenever they’d come I’d sleep with them so I could hear all the awesome stories about their students back in Phoenix. Crazy thing, somehow I ended up back in my bed when I swore I fell asleep in Grams and Pa’s bed.
Anyways, It was around 9:30 when I felt tired. I went to Grams and Pa’s bedroom then suddenly I didn’t feel tired. I wasn’t going to get up and go back into the living room so I just lied there counting 28 sheep because I couldn’t go much higher than that.
As I lied there hoping to fall asleep soon, I heard the sound of someone creeping up the stairs. It turned out to be Grams. She whispered my name. “Mya?” I lied there silently. “Mya?” she called again. I felt her presents getting closer so I quickly shut my eyes. “She asleep. Gary, come on in.” I heard Pa enter the room and shut the door every so slowly. “Pick her up and bring her to her bed.” Pa whispered. “No. She just went to bed about ten minutes ago. She’ll wake up.” Pa groaned. “that’s just great. Now what?”
It was quiet for a while. “We can risk waking her up or we can be real quiet.” Grams she responded. “I don’t want to wait another minute” Pa replied.
I heard a sound that I heard my parents make. The sound they made when either of them would leave. I then felt the bed begin to move. Grams made funny sounds I wasn’t familiar with. The sound dad makes when moms cooking was good. The only difference is the sound was quieter and in a warming tone.
I didn’t understand what I heard. For many many years I wondered and wondered about what I heard. It wasn’t until my first year of middle school I found out exactly what those sounds were. These were the sounds we learned about in health class. The sounds that haunt my brain forever. The sound of two old lovers making love next to their 5 year old “sleeping” granddaughter.
